WHAT SAM OBSERVES ABOUT THE PLANET IS THAT THERE IS A LOT OF GREENERY, LOTS OF INSECTS, BUT NOT BIG ANIMALS LIKE COWS TO EAT ALL THE GREENERY

what sam sees is a kind of smoke in the air between himself and a line of hedges it waved,billowed,and altered aka a very thin smoke. it also had a faint smell that made him dizzy and feel peculiar

he observes every thing that is not familiar to us.he finds different things like plants,animals and bugs that we dont recognize.the plants are way different then the ones from earth,and also bugs.he said it smelled weird there to.

I think it's real because, Sam was briefed by Gentry and told that the planet was like earth just without animals, and Sam was traversing through the land for almost 3 hours.
